Overpaid tax rebate & NI

At the start of this year I was reviewing my girlfriends tax payments as she had been between a few jobs lately and had been on an emergency tax codes and discovered that she had overpaid for the 07/08 tax year by about £300. We sent a letter and photocopies of relevant P45s and P60 to the tax office at the start of January. How long should I wait before following up on this?

As a second part, am I able to reclaim national insurance in the following situation? I came out of university in the 06/07 tax year and started my first job in August 06. Over the course of the rest of the tax year I earned just over £10,000 and paid around £700 in NI. For 06/07 the threshold was set at £97 per week. If the threshold counts the same way as the personal allowance does for income tax, by my calculations I should have only paid around £550 NI. Is it correct that I overpaid by £150, or have I paid the correct amount?

Thanks for any help

NI is not cumulative like tax so you pay either weekly or monthly based on your pay that week / month ...
so if e.g you only worked one week in the entire year and got paid say 150 then you would still pay NI based on (150-97) x 11% . Your tax of course would be zero.

so no you can't get a refund

Tax offices are currently inundated with post from taxpayers trying to claim their Childrens Tax credit for 2002/2003, taxpayers querying codes and statements and seeking help for tax returns due by 31st January. Because of this some offices are currently taking up to 8 weeks to wor their post.
