Insulated butter dish and gravy boat...any good?

Do these insulated things actually work? Anyone got either of them and could comment please?

I've got an insulated butter dish (the Lakeland one) and can't say I'm overly impressed with it. If I take hard, fridge-temperature butter and put it into the dish with the lid on, then leave it out on the worktop on a hot day, it goes soft and squishy. Similarly, if I put a dish full of soft and squishy butter into the fridge, it sets too hard to use...

Shame really, I'd really like one that's effective.

  • I agree totally with Bargain Rzl - the one I bought from Lakeland now sits in the fridge with empty butter wrappers which get used for greasing baking dishes and then thrown out. I now use a small china 'Butter Keeper' (google it for a picture), which I bought in TKMaxx for £3.50. You put a little cold water in the bottom and fill the top with butter and can leave it out on the worksurface and it spreads beautifully but keeps fresh. Just remember to change the water every couple of days.

I have a terracotta butter cooler that we were given as a wedding present 20 years ago! It works in a similar way to the china one mentioned above :http://www.tablemannersofbroadway.co.uk/acatalog/Henry-butter-box.jpg

  • Cant comment on the butter dish but we do have an insulated gravy jug - it looks like stainless steel and has a lid and looks really nice on the table and will keep the gravy hot for ages and ages - cost around £7 from Woolies months ago but I think Betterware do one - I thought it wouldnt be worth the money but use it every time we have gravy!

  • Hm, I have a clay or terracotta (you know like flower pots) butter dish that I was given a while ago, can't remember where from but it's great...but then I hardly ever use butter to spread, here it's only used for cooking and baking...
