The agency was correct. It also depends on the type of clearance.0

As people in earlier posts have mentioned it depends on the level of security check.
A baseline security check, like references, is quick and straightforward. However formal security clearance comes at 3 levels:
CTC Counter terrorist check. Can take between 2-5 months. If you've lived, worked or studied overseas they will take longer to check all the details and VISAs you've held etc. Also they will check the accuracy of your CV and Quals, plus your address, terrorist database information and spouse / partner details.
SC Security Check - as above but also includes a review of your finances and bank accounts.
DV - Developed Vetting -takes the longest and involves interviews with people throughout your life on character etc. You will also be interviewed - plus all the above checks to ensure that you are not susceptable to blackmail, bribery etc, nor bring the service into disrepute.
I hope this helps. Because i studied overseas 10 years ago on a short course it took 5 months for my CTC to come through. I had to verify further details with the security agent, so it may be worth asking if they need further information to help them process your application.0
