Hi,
Does anyone know if this discount also applies to student midwives? And does this discount only apply to full time or can you be part-time (I am classified by my uni as part time but actually attend uni 9 hours a week, plus between 15 and 24 hours a week placement, which is the same as the full-time students).
TIA

You need to registered full time by the Uni, if your not then you don't qualify for a discount regardless of the hours of study. If you where F/T then you would qualify.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

I know that diploma level student nurses don't pay. I was a qualified nurse but on a paid secondment doing a child health diploma and didn't have to pay.
Your placement hours do count as student hours - so I would query this with your uni as why you are part time. If not get onto your union.
Buckethead is obviously jealous as the don't have the interpersonal skills to communicate in a nice way.0 -
Thank you for the responses, especially buckethead's which made me laugh as he is rather like a bull in a china shop and charges in with such pleasant comments without knowing all the facts about another's circumstances.
To everyone else, thank you for the constructive comments.0 -
to be eligible for the discount you have to be in full time higher education.
the student is entitled to a 100% discount so if they have a partner the partner will be classed as a single person and be eligible for the single person discount of 25%... so basically if the only adults are students then nobody pays anything but if there is one working adult in the household you have to pay 75%.0 -

In the case of your partner not being a qualifying student then, if you were classed as a F/T student, your partner would become solely liable for the 75% council tax due.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. I can't understand why you're classed as part time. My hubby is a student nurse. He is in Uni about 9 hours a week but when on placement is basically full time. I had issues with the child tax credits with regard to this until my msp basically told me that my hubby was classed as full time working since it is nursing. And he gets full student discount from the council tax as well.
Being a nurse myself I know that a lot of other people who went to uni and studied begrudge the benefits (?) that student nurses appear to get but have no comprehension of the amount of time you have to commit. I did both and the amount of time i gave to my psychology degree was nothing compared to the commitment I had to give to nursing.;)0 -
Hi,
For Council Tax purposes a full time student is an individual who is required to
1. undertake periods of study , tuition or work experience which combined, equal an average of at least 21 Hours per week.
2. Over a minimum of 24 weeks per year
3. The course must subsist for at least one year
4. The course must be provided by a prescribed educational establishment.
A course which conforms to the above criteria qualifies for discount or exemption depending on the number of adult residents in the dwelling. If living alone, 100% exemption would apply. If there is you an one other resident a 25% discount would apply. If there are 3 residents and only yourself is disregarded no discount is applicable.
In addition, if your course leads to appropriate registration under the Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979 you would be eligible to a 50% discount if living on your own or, again , a 25 % reduction if living with someone not disregarded.
Hope that helps0
