Credit Checks for new Passport???????

  • Definitely just an identity check. They won't care what your balances or credit score is - they'll just want to see things like your address and perhaps how many years you've had a UK bank account, etc, to verify you are who you say you are. Fraudulent passports are big business, as is identity theft, so it's just extra measures to protect genuine applicants, which can't be a bad thing, eh. :D

  • Thanks for your advice everyone - I just seem to be a big stresshead these days when it comes to all things credit related :o. I did check with the passport office and equifax and they confirmed that it is just to check that I am indeed living at my address so its just like an identity thing. Thanks again x x x

Old Topic but I was browsing and though I'd tell you about this.

The credit check is actually performed to check you don't owe the government any money. Unfortunately if you have a CCJ or something like that for an amount owed to the government or your local council eg. Council Tax, they will refuse your application as they do not want you to leave the country without paying them.

If you have outstanding debts regarding companies that are not the government eg Credit Cards, Personal loans it won't matter.

    Hope this clears things up.

I got a passport when I owed housing arrears to the local council.

I renewed my passport in January with no problems at all, despite the fact I have defaults left right and centre due to being on a DMP - think it only took a week.
