Personal Fuel allowance

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if someone could tell me their opinion on this!

Before I start, I do appreciate that tax varies regarding what type of car I have and also what I'm earning, but for the purposes of this the car is pretty much in the same class, maybe marginally better than my last one, the old car was 137 emmissions and the new one 138. Also, my salary has only increased by a small amount.

In my last job all my personal fuel was paid for by the company and obviously I paid fuel benefit tax on this. If I look at my coding notice the tax on my fuel benefit was actually more than on my car.

I have started a new job and I get no personal allowance at all, so I figured this would bring my tax down a good bit. I logged all my details today and basically I am only saving about 10-15 a month.

My question is surely this can't be right? Even if my salary has gone up a little that still doesn't make much of a difference.

I did call the tax office back tonight-at 19:55 and they said their screens had frozen and I had to call back tomorrow. I thought that that was a major coincidence since they closed in 5 minutes later- I have a feeling they didn't want to start something new lol. I do plan on calling them tomorrow night, but the advice I'm looking for is am I sptting in the wind or should I have saved more??

Thank you for reading this, and sticking with it- I hope it made a bit of sense lol. ;)

    For clarification:

    1) Did you get a company car in old and new jobs?

    2) What was list price of both cars?

    3) Any chance of knowing your old and new tax codes?

Ah – you threw me completely when you said that you got no personal allowance – I take it that you mean no personal fuel allowance.

Your code has increased by 167 points equivalent to allowance of 1670. This will reduce your tax by £334 per annum or £28 per month.

Based on what you have provided your current code is more or less correct. This has been calculated as follows (presumably your car is diesel)

Personal allowances 6035 less car benefit 3521 leaves 2514 personal allowances available. The 3521 is calculated by multiplying the list price of your car by the appropriate percentage – 18% in your case.

Thanks for your help with that.

It's just quite depressing I have lost a great perk like that and I don't really gain much.... oh well, nothin more certain in life than death and taxes.

Just for when it comes to pick a new car.....am I best to go for lower emissions or lower car value? I haven't seen the list yet but I presume they will all be approx the same value...
