Can you claim Children's Tax Credit from 2002/3?

This because it was activated legally from this time onwards.People only missed it because the (rip-off) goverment did not inform people they could claim it.
you just mean they gave it to them, which kind of contradicts didn't inform them.I told around 40 couples of this not one of them were aware of this .
Please provide a source for the 90 % .
I would imagine the 40 couples you told didn't remember, if you can remember what tax code you were on six years ago you are doing better than me & most others. I had no clue until I checked.
The 90% was just a rough guess, judging by what I have been told by the two people I know who work at the tax office & are involved in working this. Most claims are from people who already received this in tax year 2002/2003. I have however just found this http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/stats/wftc/wftc-takeup-2002-03.pdf Take up rate was actually 82-88% so slightly lower than my estimate, but not that far out.0 -

Thanks to this site,i really appreciate it.Incidently i sent my form off mid january, for anyone else still waiting. I have already provided a reliable quote from our processing teams about how they are finding that only 3 or 4 out of every 50 claims are due any money.
How many of those 40 couples have received a cheque now and how many have received a letter telling them they have already recieved it in 2002/2003?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

It will be interesting to see how many get cheques.
I can only say what i know to be happening to me and my friends. We didn t know anything about this until mse and i definatly didn t recieve any mail shot.I would of actioned it straight away.
Thanx for your input.Life is short, smile while you still have teeth0 -
I contacted the tax office and they went through all my details on the phone and confirmed that i could apply for the allowance and advised me to write a letter including all the details about my children, that i was working that year, they lived at my house, NI number, etc etc.
I sent off a letter and called a couple of weeks later to check but it hadn't arrived. So I sent of a copy of the letter and the application form which i found online. ( not giving up that easily)
Just received a reply letter '....Tax relief is income based...reduced by £2 for every £3 earned at the higher taxible rate ....allowance is reduced to nil '
I gave the tax office all my details, they confirmed i could apply and yet i just get more of my time wasted because i was not eligible. Yes i am a higher rate tax payer and perhaps in the curent climate grateful that i work in the public sector but for years gone by i always seem to be just above the limit for everything that is handed out by the govenment / tax office.
My wife and i are working parents living in the SE and bringing up children. It seems if you live in a part of the country where food and living accomodation is cheaper and you consequently earn less you are given tax credit and more allowances so you have more disposable income.
Who put these people in power. Tax those earing money and give it those earing less is nonsense. This is a free market economy. Do they really think Tesco's in London charge the same as Tesco's in Derby so we need to give the people in Derby a bit more cash. Out of touch with the real world -
I would move if the government had placed this country in debt up to the hilt and wanted me to give them over £15k just for the privilidge of moving house0 -
I work for HMRC now though I didn't in 2001/2002 when the Childrens Tax Credit allowance was brought in but I clearly remember my husband receiving the mail shot back then. We queried it because of the removal of the married couples allowance around the same time.
The Inland Revenue were a government department which collected taxes then. They weren't the Tax credit and Child Benefit paying organisation that they are now. So in the normal course of their annual coding they sent out the mailshots to the taxpayers about the new allowance and advertised in the media.
I can site many reasons why some people didn't get it and they include problems still occurring today - out of date addresses, Inland Revenue not being aware the taxpayer was actually in employment, people not bothering to respond to the mailshots and of course some people being left out.
Our processing teams are currently working on batches of 50 at a time and they are finding that only 3 or 4 of those in each batch haven't received it and it is being paid to them now. The rest have either already got it or weren't actually working at that time and so don't qualify.
I know you said no disrespect at the beginning of your post but you obviously think it's the Revenues fault but I don't see what else the Revenue could have done back then bar knock on every door.
Every week I deal with people who come in angrily to query their code or to chase up a claim for a refund of tax and many times delays have been caused by their failure to respond to letters sent out by HMRC. They expect HMRC to have a crystal ball and know when they moved house or they expect their employer to have informed us. It doesn't seem to have entered their head to inform HMRC themselves.
You wouldn't believe how many come in to ask about a letter they have recieved and when I ask them what it's about they tell me they don't know because they haven't even opened the envelope:eek: . What about people taking a little bit of responsibility for their own affairs? Why do so many people expect to be spoonfed?
I'm not saying HMRC don't get it wrong but it isn't always their fault.
This forum is a huge jump in the right direction in getting people mobilised to educate themselves and others and ultimately take control/responsibility for their own affairs.
Sorry if that sounds like a rant it's not meant to be
ummm - Not sure why you quoted me in your post as I wasnt posting in reference to anything you had written but to a different poster, but nevertheless a television campaign / newspaper campaign should have been done and letters should have been sent out to all potentially eligible people, if 3 out of 4 people are being refunded per 50 claims and there are thousands of claims then a lot of people missed out and that is not good enough - I am not an angry idiot ranting, just a normal mum with a brain who was not informed money was DUE from the government and am consequently ripped off to the tune of over £500 as I did not know about the previous year I could have claimed on. Incidentally 3 out 5 friends I told this to have claimed successfully and they also have brains!
Rant over lol0 -
Another person has heard today got a check for a whole £1 and a few pence.:D
I ve e-mailed every-one asking to be kept up to date,as i really believe that it is a higher ratio than the goverment is letting on.Life is short, smile while you still have teeth0 -
For those who've received their cheques - did you send to your own tax office or to the Leeds address?
I sent my form on 29th December to Leeds LS1 4SA (was advised by my local tax office that was where it should be sent) but so far have heard nothing despite being pretty sure I'm eligible.
Anyone else send theirs to Leeds and still waiting? Anyone know which number to use for the Leeds branch that's dealing with the enquiries? (sent it recorded so might ring up and ask if they'll confirm receipt)
Cheers.
