  • Because it was advertised. The Inland Revenue didn't know you had children.

They can't tell you the amount over the telephone because it's not a direct payment. They have to do an assessment/tax calculation. And then if there's an underpayment in a later year, they'll take this away from the amount you get.

problem is even they have admitted it was not advertised enough - and it obviously wasn't or they would not be inundated with requests now - I pick up on most things but I never picked up on this till the end of last year
  • I would have definitely sent off if I'd seen it advertised. Or replied to anything from Inland revenue. We were out of the country from August 2000 to August 2002. So I'm guessing any advertising was done during this period.

  • Hi ( i apologise if I have posted in the wrong place)

I was wondering if anyone was experiencing similar problems with claiming child tax benefit for 2002/03? I spoke to my local tax office in december and after giving my husbands NI number the helpful man confirmed we had not received this allowance and we were due a rebate. He requested I send in a letter giving specific information and said a chq will be in the post after xmas.
I sent this letter on the 04.12.08. Xmas came and went with no chq so I phoned my tax office again. I asked if they could at least confirm they had received our letter and when we will be receiving chq. The lady I spoke to said she was unable to do that and best advice you could offer was to send letter again recorded delivery so I did this was on the 06.01.09.
I just phoned up my tax office again to see what was happening and the lady I spoke to said she is unable to give me any information other than a letter should be going out to claimants and if we dont receive it by april we should call back then. GRRRRRR! i dont think they would be so unhelpful or relaxed if I owed them 1000+++

We phoned and were told the exact same thing.
We sent our form off Jan 22nd recorded, however sent to wrong local tax office.
When we rang we were told not to worry as all the forms regarding this are sent through to the correct sorting office dealing with it.
We were also told that they have a big backlog to get through.
  • My husband heard something about being able to claim this Child Tax Credit Allowance via his work in November 2008. He bought the information home and I put it in my pile of "to do" things. It wasn't until I saw the reminder on the MSE website that I eventually did something about it.

Our first son was born in February 2003 and I had started maternity leave in December 2002, eventually resigning later on in 2003. I simply checked both our P60's, didn't find any "H" or "T" codes, so with nothing to lose filled out the 11TCT form and posted it recorded delivery on 22nd January 2009.

I was delighted to recieve a cheque this morning for £1193.64! The full allowance of £1048.12 plus a smaller amount of £145.52 classed as a "repayment supplement". I rang my husband and almost screamed down the phone!

Thank you MSE for reminding me to check!
Good luck everyone and hope you don't have to wait too long for news..

"Children's Tax Credit was well publicised prior to its commencement and all existing recipients of Married Couple's Allowance, Additional Personal Allowance and Widow's Bereavement Allowance received mail shots about the alternative relief. HMRC (we were then the Inland Revenue) also ran extensive press and TV advertising and for new claimants the new mothers' Bounty Pack had claim forms included."

  • Hi, been reading these threads for advice regarding the childrens tax credits for 2002/2003 and I got my cheque today for the full amount.

However, I noticed on the bottom of my form that it said I am entitled to a one off payment of Childrens Baby Tax Credit. The Overpayment will be sent shortly.

Wow, does this mean another cheque for money? I had a quick look over the internet and I can't work out if I will get up to £520 or £5290. The latter would be great but my luck can't be that good can it??

Does anyone know what this Childrens Baby Tax Credit is?
