overpaid tax on wrong code, made redundant so want my money back! help!

sorry if theres anything regarding this already but i couldnt really find my answer anywhere.... or at least make sense of anything!

I've never paid tax before as I've always been a student and now im confused!

I was on job seekers allowance for about 10 weeks then got a job in october, I was put on basic rate (even tho I handed in all the forms!!) and was paid weekly so for about 10 weeks (maybe 11) I paid LOADS of tax.

My job was only part time (not too sure about this because I dont understand how it works) but i wasnt supposed to pay any tax at all so about 2 weeks ago my code finally came on then guess what... i lost my job.

So i've paid about £260 in tax.

Now I was going to sign on job seekers but it said you can't reclaim any tax owed till april.

Obviously if this is the only way I can get my money back I will do that but I was just wondering if there was any way I could get my tax back now and then go on job seekers afterwards?

  • No, you have to wait until the end of the tax year to claim back overpayments.

If you start working again before the end of the tax year, make sure you hand your P45 to your new employer and you should get the tax refunded in your first pay packet.

You should still be able to sign back on to job seekers - hand your P45 into the jobseekers office and any overpayment should automatically be refunded to you at the appropriate time.

Unfortunately I think that it is likely that op was on a BR code on an emergency basis (week 1) - unlikely therefore that he will be able to get it back through the benefit office. Review at the end of the year is the likeliest option - keep part 1A of your form P45 at all costs

I'm confused, I got over taxed 2 years ago & realised in October 06 & managed to claim it back in time for my december paycheck.

Treated myself to a nice 3 week trip to new york as a result.

Have the rules changed since then?

i am a she... and i paid basic rate for 10 weeks!
I haven't got a P45, do I get this from my old employer?

it's totally rubbish because I owe money to pay off my overdraft by june and I bet I don't get my money till after then! luckily I will be able to cover it but it's totally shocking how someone in my situation has £260 she cannot get and thus is having to sign on job seekers!
