What does your high street look like?

I went to Birmingham City Centre today. I haven't been for a while and noticed quite a few shops advertising closing down sales or had closed completly, including one that apparently had its last day yesterday but still had its doors open this morning.

I think I saw about maybe four or five shops in total. The amount of shops having a sale seems to be a lot higher as well.

    Pretty busy in central London...
  • I was in North Finchley yesterday. I was sat on the bus going down the high road what struck me were the cafes and resturants all empty.

Went into Sainsburys on a Saturday afternoon...only one person in front of me?!
  • Went to IKEA today with daughter......car park was rammed. Lots of people walking around, but when we got to the tills, people mostly just buying knick-knacks costing a few pounds.

Are we all (collectively) going bankrupt?

  • We were at the Lowrey Centre today and it was depressing, at least 10 shops gone, and at least 5 with closing down sales (although not reflected in the sense of bargains). I loved the Lowey and will be very sad to see its demise.

Apparently 40 + empty in our town. Doesn't look good. A large riverside restaurant complex cost 2m + to build gone bust, 48 appartments built next to it and only 2 sold. Loads of industrial unit space to rent outside town.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

No offence, but I think the Lowry is an appalling retail centre. It reminds me of one of the fake shopping centres they build for films which looks real, but on closer inspection all the shops are fake ones with made up names.

Quite how it has stayed in business for as long as it has is beyond me.
  • I did the same yesterday, in my nearest town with a shopping mall (Crawley) and it was shocking, plenty of shops closed, alot of small shops, a travel agent, toy shops, along with the obvious Zavvi, Woolies, Whittards, Officers club (though i can still see them there in 2010 since no one wants their stock). There was also Sports Soccer closed and Disney store closing down.

It was a real shock and i never imagined things would get this bad, i think the worst part is that it will get worse.

I understand there are 22 empty shops here, which probably doesn't include about 10 being completed just off High St.

Things must be looking up, as our 4th Subway fast food outlet in the town is opening soon.
