Wrong tax code and leaving employer

in Cutting tax
Hey all
I've been in the civil service for past 5 years and am leaving to work elsewhere next month.
I took an unpaid career break June-Sept 2008, and as per civil service career break procedures I received a P45. Upon my return to work in Oct I gave my P45 back in, but it got lost, and due to a technical issue I have not been able to view my payslips online til December's pay.
It turns out that I have been emergency taxed for Oct/Nov/Dec on tax code 'BR/1'. Before my career break I wass on tax code '543L'.
My employer have now found my missing P45 (found first week of Jan) and say that it will sort itself out.
My questions are:
- As I am leaving my employer end of this month do I need to do anything e.g. speak to Inland Revenue re getting the overpayment back?
- Will it come back in my pay packet (either Jan's from current employer or in later month from new employer)?
- Or will it come as a cheque at end of financial year?
Thanks in advance

you will have to ring inland revenue to ask for it back, it usually comes as a cheque and takes a couple of weeks but when i asked for mine a couple of months ago they had a backlog of up to 8 weeks to deal withnow proud mum to 3 handsome boys :j latest one born 10/10/11:j0

if your payroll department can sort out the problem before you leave, then you won't need to do anything further. They should be able to sort it all out before you leave
Check what tax is paid/refunded in your pay this month and take it from there.
If your tax is not sorted before you leave, If would imagine you will have to go through the inland revenue tax claim route.Indecision is the key to flexibility
