i'm starting to apply for jobs now (on maternity leave at mo and got made redundant in sept), and i need to start looking about a childminder for my 8 month old.

How much per hour do they charge? i dont have a clue and friends have told me all different things - from £1.60 per hour (sounds v. cheap) to £3.50, thats quite a variation and I just want to get a feel for what most people pay. if anyone replies could you let me know whereabouts you are too cos i've been told it varies slightly geographically.

ta very much

Childminders can take a number of children (up to six I believe) so they could be getting £18 an hour, although I think they can only have 3 full time and the number of children they are allowed to mind includes their own children.

yes but they look after more than 1 child at a time - usually up to about 5, so they're getting a lot more than minimum wage!

i contacted NIMCA and they said around £3, but I wanted to know what people are ACTUALLY paying, rather than what some organistion tells me, IYKWIM

I use a registered Nursery and pay £105 a week consistently all year, this is because my child is at school and the usage changes also for tax credits too

Her hours are 8-9 am, they leave her to school, then collect and she's there from 2-5ish sometimes earlier sometimes later

Also full time in holidays, public holidays and school days off. Private childminder wasnt able to do this for me so it works well for my situation

We pay £55 for 16 hours a week so £3.43, We get it all paid via child care allowance, however you also have to pay the childminders even at Christmas say when your off 2 weeks and they're off to,

leftieM and nadnad - thanks for clearing that up for me. I didn't realise that they would mind a number of children, I was thinking of a nanny-type arragement.

i wont get any help towards childcare costs. i'm only going to be working 2.5 days a week and basically dont want to be paying out everything i earn on childcare! or whats the point in working! i'll have to start asking about locally, its scary the thought of leaving him with someone.
