Hi
I dont know if anyone can help or if this is the correct board, but I have been off work since May last year. My situation is, that my last sick line from my doctor ended on 23rd December 2005, I have not been back to get another one, and have made the descion as of Monday past to resign from my job, I have to give them four weeks notice, I therefore have to try to get another sick line to cover me from the 24th December to the end of my four weeks notice period. I cant see a problem with getting another sick line as I am still ill.
My question is, can my doctor back date the sick line to the 24th December 2005? I now I have been abit daft in not keeping my sick line to my current employer up to date, but your advice would be great.
Thank you !

if your resigning why do you want it backdated, sorry dont understand your post do you mean sick note.0

I doubt GP sick notes could be backdated as the GP wouldn't have seen the person on that date. If you are still sick and unable to work you can either continue to see your GP who will give you a sick note until your employer 'lets you go' or you can resign now and in light of the fact that you've been off sick for 8 months it's unlikely that your employer will require you to give 4 weeks notice if you can't actually work it because of ill health.0

If you were already in receipt of a doctor's line there shouldn't be too much problem getting the line backdated if you are still sick. I had one backdated three months once.0

Yep I was already in receipt of doctor's line's. Thanks for the help, I told my work over the phone on Monday that I was resigning, I'm going to the docotor's tomorrow to get a sick line to cover then sending that along with a confirmation letter to my employer.

Yes, they can backdate. Some of the backdated ones I have seen come in were pink, as opposed to the normal white paper of GP certificates, but I've definitely seen backdated ones.

Ask your Dr for a Med 5, that the backdating one.
You'll also need a Med 3 for a forward period to allow you to claim Incapacity Benefit.0 -
