more adviced please

hi again, need some more advice please!
I have just lost my job,2 weeks ago,and if i dont get a job in the next month i will have to go BR.
I have enough money to pay my debts for the next month, will i keep paying them or stop and save the money for more important things?
£240 a month on the dole not good!
Can i open another bank account now before i go BR?or will i have to wait until after BR?just so my allowance can be paid into.
Thanks Mark

That is a tough call. :undecided

How likely is a new job? Realistically?

A Barclays CashCard or Co-op Cashminder account can be opened before the BR, as long as you accept the fact that (a) technically you need the OR's permission to use it after the BR (normally fine) and (b) there is a small chance that it may be tempoarily frozen for a day or so.

    Mark,

You might want to rethink paying anything if you are serious about going BR as you will need the money for the court fee's if you dont already have the money aside for that?

    Are you single? Renting??

If you have kids, you can claim child tax credit and if renting you can claim LHA to cover the rent (or most of it) and council tax benefit. Have you put in claims for these as they are not always backdated?? Pick up forms from your local council offices and do it Monday morning if you have not yet claimed.

As to BR, its up to you whether or not you pay your debts to see what happens. If you pay your debts this month and then go BR, its a waste of money. If you don't pay your debts this month but find a job, then you are behind on your repayments which will cause issues of their own. And if you pay up and find a new job then all is fine. Only you can decide which option is best.

If you do go BR, you still have to find the £345 OR fees payable at the court to declare BR. As you are on JSA, you will have the £150 court fee waived (with completed forms and proof of JSA).

You can open a new account now. I would advise it even if you don't go BR - so that JSA money is not taken up with overdraft/charges etc. If you do go BR, then its usual that basic accounts are not frozen by the OR and you can carry on using them, and it also takes a few weeks to get up and running so do this sooner rather than later. The Co-Operative Cashminder is the most BR friendly.
