Annual salary review-with complications

Good evening,

I've been trying to work out what to do about my salary review, as I will have been working with the same employer for a year from the end of next week. My contract states my " salary will be reviewed annually" but in May I will be taking on extra responsibility and more hours.

I am currently a nanny for one child and get an hourly rate (26 hours per week). Come April I will also be looking after a baby one day a week, then in May I'll be looking after the baby four days a week plus the older child, with a 41 hour week. It becomes further complicated by the fact that in September the older child will start school.

I'm not sure how to calculate what sort of raise I want now and how to factor in the different times I will have the children later in the year. I have spoken to other nannies in the area with similar aged children to get an idea of what they get pay wise and they get far more than I do at present and I don't know how the parents will react to the difference in wages and the need for two pay rises in one year. If anyone has any advice on the best way to proceed it would be very welcome.

Another question is how confident you are that you could find another job paying the same kind of rates as other nannies in your area if you don't get what you feel you are worth in your current job?

    I fear I have no answers ...

I've had a chat to a few friends and they all know people who are looking for nannies at present so I feel I would find something fairly soon.

I also think that in my favour, the only reason the family hired me as a nanny was through a recommendation from one of their friends, who I babysat for. They have told me they would never consider someone who they couldn't get a personal recommendation from.

  • Don't undersell yourself, just ask for the amount you think you're worth. Worst case they say no? That's even unlikely to happen, they might try to negotiate down but stick to your guns if you know others around are all earning more.

It's extremely unlikely they'd turn you down to find someone else, you have momentum on your side now.
