T K Maxx - Refund Faulty Item Without Receipt?

I bought my son a Trespass coat from T K Maxx in November for either £17 or £27 (can't remember). I've lost or thrown out the receipt by now and yesterday the zip pull snapped off the zip.

Can I insist T K Maxx refund the coat as it's faulty and he's only had it at most 3 months without proof of purchase? I must have paid in cash because there's no corresponding transaction on my bank statements so I can't show a bank statement as proof.

Can you not just thread something through the zip bit to pull it up and down? I have used a paper clip before, lol!

With no proof of purchase I wouldn't have thought that you can insist.

Or why not try contacting Trespass?

  • No, the pull bit snapped and then fell off so you can't zip the coat up at all. I'll take it in there tomorrow but I expect they won't be incredibly helpful.

In this situation,I think i would ring the store and ask to speak to the Manager before making a journey there. They may exchange out of goodwill, but they may not.
  • The chances of you exchanging this is basically none. My mum works in TK Maxx as part of customer service. If you have no reciept then you have no proof it was purchased.
If you do find the reciept it needs to be returned within 90 days of purchase.
Even then your chances are slim as you have had it for nearly 3 months and could be blamed on wear and tear and as they always have different stuff in they cannot offer a replacement.
I know this seems harsh but my mum has actually had people come in trying to return shoes that they have clearly been wearing for months.
  • You should get the store to refund you as its faulty but as they sell all different brands they may be difficult about it without the receipt.

I got a waterproof jacket from John Lewis for my son last Easter and the exact same thing happened last week when he had been at school.......and there is no way I still have the receipt. The zip wouldn't budge but two of my other kids have these wee zip pulls that you can buy for a quid for charity (sesame st ones from Morrisons) - put one of them on and bingo- the zip works. Beats getting a new zip put in which would cost you at least a fiver at an alteration shop.
