I've been made redundant - do I have to pay child support while not earning?

Hi there,

My husband has just been made redundant with immediate effect. He has recieved statuutory, non-taxable redundancy of about £1,000 - however as he is on a 3 month notice period, he will recieve 3 months salary, but will be taxed on this. He has 2 children from a previous marriage, and pays £600 a month for as child support. My question is, as he is now "unemployed", what are the rules on this? Does he need to keep paying child support until his 3 month notice salary runs out? Or, does he not have to pay anything until he gets another job (soon, I hope!) as he does not have any money coming in apart from the 3 months salary he has in reserve.

Thanks in advance for your help

  • Salary in lieu of notice counts as income so his assessment won't change until the end of the 3 months. I would recommend that he contacts the gestapo now as they are notoriously inefficient.

  • Many thanks, I will make sure he contacts them asap - I know what they're like!!

Some more advice for you, its up to you wether or not you choose to use the information,

Never deal with the csa on the phone, ensure that everything is put in writing.
Tell them, by way of a letter that you do not wish to deal with them over the phone.
    Never phone!
    Always write!
When you write to them send EVERY letter by recorded delivery and print off the delivery reports from the Royal mail website!
    If they phone you....never speak!
(once they have introduced themselves, DON'T be rude to them, just put the phone down) They supposedly record some / all phone calls for staff training purposes so....dont be rude.
Keep copies of all comunication, yours and theirs, don't lose anything!
Build a paper file! Do not lose anything
If you have the time scan everything into your pc so that you have a backup of your paper file.

Believe me......you will need a paper file. Phone calls will get in the way and conversations can be misunderstood on both sides.
I have never spoken to the csa, and my paper file is HUGE, but I do not regret this decision. In fact building a paper file, and backing up everything to my PC has been the more than worth the huge effort on my behalf

Your OH needs to contact his ex and inform her he has been made redundant.
Like pd001 has said you need to inform the CSA by writing a letter and sending recorded delivery right now if not sooner.
They will carry on taking £600 a month from his account so once the 3 months are up and if he has still not got another job he will need to stop the DD coming out of his / your bank account.
He also needs to sign on for JSA which helps prove he is out of work.
    GOOD LUCK
