Offered a loan and I don't have an income as such!

I rang LloydsTSB Phonebank this morning to check my balance etc as was told " Mrs X do you know you are eligable for one of our personal loans? ".

So, I asked how could I be eligable for a loan when I didn't have an income as I am a full time mum. The only incoming payments I have are Child Tax Credit,Working Families Tax Credit and of course Child Benefit.

The tax credit and working families come to £70 a week so not a massive amount.

She said I had an excellent credit history and asked if my partner was employed. I said my husband was employed, that we had a mortgage through them and she said that would be the reason I was being offered a loan.

That can't be the case because we do not have a joint bank account and the mortgage is only in my husbands name (which will be getting changed to joint names next year when the endowment pays it off ;)).

Is it any wonder people are getting themselves in the proverbial?

Lloyds need something doing about this. I know of someone else who actually got their credit card on FAMILY ALLOWANCE. Its not right to use this as income. I take it you refused this offer. I would have too as I would have known that I had no way of repaying it back... ;)

Yep, I certainly did refuse it.

I get the same thing everytime I go into the bank to pay money in, they ask if I have a minute as someone would like to see me about 'reviewing' my account and did I want to see someone about a personal loan.

I just go and pay money into the wall now inside the bank, it is less hassle.

Banks are just clutching at straws now to try and get business.

I got a call from the Halifax on Tuesday Morning.

Caller:- As a valued Halifax customer, I am calling to offer you our Halifax one card.
Me:- Is it a credit card?
    Caller:- Well, it's a mastercard.
Me:- No, I'm not interested in a credit card thankyou.
    Caller:- Any why is that?
Me:- (And this is the truth) Well I had a credit card years ago and run up a £6,000 debt I couldn't pay off.
Caller:- Ok then thanks very much. (Rung off)

I don't class myself as a Halifax customer as such, I am jointly named on the mortgage with OH. But they can't phone him and offer a credit card, as he already has one with them. I bank with the HSBC.
Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £19,575.02

All these is a consequence of too much reliance of computers. Surely if your account was reviewed by a human, there is no way they would have offered all these loans etc (i hope not)

I have received phone calls from 2 different LloydsTSB's in my area asking if they could offer me a loan basically and wanting me to arrange an appointment to go in and see them.

One was a manager, the other a financial advisor so they must have looked into my account before deciding to ring me.

OP, do you have any other regular money paid into the accoun? (ie: does your hubby pay in some money to it?) because lloyds would see that too and may have offered you the loan based on that too.

Nope, I get £280 tax credits per 4 week period and £80 child benefit so a total of £360 per month which I use to pay for food, clothes and the dog's insurance cover. My husband pays for everything else from his 14k wage. Luckily the mortgage is less than £100 a month as we got in when property prices were low years ago.

    ;)
