The above is the only recipe that I could find online, but my Mum used to do this to reduce the saturated fat content of butter after my Dad had a heart attack in the days when healthy margarines were hard to find.
It works really well and is quite easy, especially if you have a mixer.
I think that my Mum increased the proportions to a cup of oil to a packet of butter.
Use oilve oil if you like the taste, otherwise go fo something flavourless or lightly flavoured.
  • Thanks for that. Just got a Kenwood food processor off Freecycle so will try that this weekend.

Hmmmmmm, which oil to use . . .

I make my own butter and keep it in the fridge and just take out enough butter for the days usage and keep that in my little dish. It spreads nicely at room temp and of course its only enough for the day so won't go off.

I have read that you can beat in a little oil whilst mixing it but it stays soft enough on my kitchen worktop.

I do this too and I blast it for seven secs in microwave if it is too hard (or a very cold day!!!;) )

I read in one of Shirley Goode's books about beating a cup of milk or water into a softened block of butter. It helps to make it spreadable and actually reduces the calories compared with adding oil. It is a bit cheaper too.

I just do half a block of butter at a time to make sure the milk doesn't go off before we've used the butter up.

As I mentioned yesterday I would try an experiment to double your butter! The original idea was that you add butter and water together to double the quantities but I thought this might be a bit bland so heres what I did!!!:D
I cut about 2cm of the end of a block of butter (never thought to weigh it:o ) and softened it for a few seconds in the microwave in a small bowl.
I then added a soup spoon of water and a soup spoon of sunflower oil and mixed it all together until smooth with a fork. I stuck my finger in and tasted it and it was just like butter ..I honestly couldnt tell! so I added another soup spoon full of oil and mixed that in....still tasted like butter :T I recon I made enough butter for a days worth of spreading for us , so I recommend you give it a try if funds are tight but like me you enjoy your butter!

If you are wondering why I used a soup spoon its simply the first one I grabbed:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
    Thanks for the original idea!!:T

    Hi bertibots,

I'm glad it worked! :) As there's another thread on making your own spreadable butter with different variations, I'll add your thread to it to keep all the replies together.
