Import charges

Hello all. Does anyone know how much customs charge these days if I buy something from America (to be shipped to the UK)? I want to buy several of those magic scarves that were in the Sun newspaper yesterday as presents but I think I remember someone mentioning that clothing shipped from America costs a lot in import duties. Can anyone help, or has anyone bought from Magic Scarf recently and remembers what it cost? Many thanks!

Customs charges were changed at the end of the year...I think you can now purchase up to the value of £105. However, imports are still subject to VAT charges. Best of luck!

you would pay duty on anything over £105
    VAT on anything over £18
and there is usually a handling charge of around £8 (depends who delivers it)

  • you'll have to pay VAT and they will charge for issuing the paperwork too. Better if you have friends living accross the pond to buy them for you and stick in post as Gift/Present
  • Thanks all! Especially for the link. I don't really want to pay almost as much as the items would be worth again to import them so will order from the UK site :-)

My daughter has about three of them that she has bought from various markets in the uk. Import charges are hit and miss as some people have to pay them and others don't for the same stuff.
