Original Agreement question

If I request a copy of my original loan
agreement and the debt collection agency
can't supply it does that mean I don't have to
pay the debt.

The reason I ask is that I have been paying
£50 a month for over 10 years now. The original
loan was as I remember(lost paperwork years ago) for £8,000 and the last
time I spoke to them(8-10 months ago) they said the outstanding
amount was somewhere around £5-6k.

What is the likelyhood they will have the original
paperwork?

ps. should they be providing me with regular statements of
my account payments or do I have to request them?

Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves
