Day cut to give to another staff member ?

Hi any advice appreciated, will ring ACAS in the morning ,
My daughther has been informed of hours cuts to come , she works 7.5hrs on a Saturday & 6hrs on a sunday .
She has been told that she will lose her 6 hours on a sunday and a girl who only works 5 hours on a saturday will then do 5 hours on a sunday instead.
Can they take this away from her and give to someone else who has never worked on the sunday??.
She used to only work on a saturday but for the last year and a half was given the 2 days as temporary but not in writing. Does this affect it?
We appreciate that cutbacks need to be made in these times but when she is the only member from the 5 weekend staff being cut this seems feel this is unfair.
She has worked their for 2 and half years.
Thanks in advance

Seems odd to me.
Reason for it seeming odd - this doesnt exactly count as cutbacks methinks - they will only save 1 hour in total between the two of them.
At present they work respectively: 13.5 hours and 5 hours = 18.5 hours. The change would result in them working respectively 7.5 hours and 10 hours = 17.5 hours.
Whats the big deal in the employer swopping hours round like that (against the interests of your daughter) for the sake of literally 1 hour?
This sounds more "personal" to me - the other girl could have been ingratiating herself a bit to get your daughter's hours taken away from the "owner" of those hours (ie your daughter) and handed over to her instead.
I wouldnt have thought it could be the case that they are dissatisfied with your daughters performance at work - as she has been working there long enough that one presumes they are satisfied with her performance (unless your daughter has altered her attitude to work noticeably recently and you werent aware of it).
So - I guess its down to checking out with your daughter whether anything has affected her performance at work - such that the employer would want to cut back her hours personally. Has your daughter been having riotous nights out on Saturdays and going into work on Sundays barely fit to stand at a counter?
Personally - I would start with making enquiries with my daughter to see whether anything has changed in her life and needs attention - before deciding they like the other girl better.0 -

Or maybe the root is just good old favouritism .... I've had it and I know other people who have had it too... In my old job the rota was just a tool and demonstrated who was "favourite" this week.

I DO know favoritism happens - I've been on the "blunt end" of that more times than I care to mention:
- told off for things when it was the other person at fault (but they were the managers friend)
- severely disciplined for only a minor level "offence"
etc
so I am well aware favoritism and other general bias exists.
I am just suggesting with starting by investigating to see if anything has changed as regards the daughter personally - then, if nothing has changed in that respect, moving onto investigating whether its favoritism.
I dont always and automatically cast employers in the wrong - despite the amount of bad treatment I have had from them over the years. They do occasionally get things right - not very often mind you - but it does happen once in a while.0 -
thanks for your answers

Have i got the wrong end of the stick? I read from the OP that the other persn is SWAPPING their 5 hrs on saturday to the Sunday.
This would mean the shop is saving 6 hours, which out of 18 is significant.
No idea how much Saturday workers get.. £6 per hour(??) is just under £1900 per year straight to profit... Dont know what sort of business it is, but say they make 40% profit, they'd have to increase sales by £4750 to make the same amount.0
