Thanks Generali. I've answered your checklist below:

    1. Check credit rating - I did this when I took out a contract with the smaller hosting company, but that was over 9 years ago. Might be a bit out of date now - better check the current situation methinks!

    2. Alternative ready - well, I do have this as I have my BT as main ISP and the hosting with a separate company. I guess I could always shift it all back to BT if push came to shove. I will check how to do this though, so if I need to do it in a hurry I can.

    3. Data back-ups - I always do this locally anyway, so that's okay.

It's a useful exercise to think about it all though - I would be lost without my email and web usage, and I suspect many other small businesses are the same.

For regulatory reasons, the hedge fund had to consider what would happen if certain disasters happened and plans had to be in place to try to mitigate the effects of disasters.

IIRC, one idea was that if all internet went down in Central London the hedge fund would be run from my tiny home office in Sevenoaks with me on the other end of the phone in our bankers' office in Docklands.

It's a useful exercise to consider what would happen if we lost internet connectivity for an hour/day/month and whatever other calamitous things you can come up with.

Years ago (i.e. before PCs rules the world) I used to work as a systems analyst for a very large company, and we had a whole disaster recovery protocol for if the end of the world was nigh (a.k.a. an irretrievable systems crash). This consisted of a large lorry being delivered with a mainframe computer and two computer terminals set up in the back. The idea was we loaded our system and the last backup data, and then ran the crucial bits of the business from the truck for a few days until the proper system could be reinstated.

We never had to use this for real, but we did a test run which only a few of the IT staff knew was a test run (i.e. all the main office staff though they had no computer for several days). We did choose a nice quiet time in the sales calendar, but it was mayhem even so! It was good fun for the IT staff though - we had a great time running around, fixing things and making people realise just how very very important we were...

    :rotfl:

It was even more fun when we confessed at the end of 3 days that it was all a test!

    Happy days!

    :D

It looks like XLN isshifting it's broadband from Tiscali wholesale to BT wholesale.

If you do as instructed and change your broadband username, you should be ok.
You may need to reboot your router.

Thanks for that, Chunter. I've spent all day trying to sort this problem. Managed to speak to XLN eventually & they do indeed give you a new username and password. Couldn't reboot my router though. The computer shop up the road said it will need re-programming. Bad form on Tiscali's part though, I was minutes away from signing up with an alternative provider.

I got a temporary user id/password from 0800 954 2857. They are open Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm and are cheaper (and quicker to answer) than the 0871 number.

You'll need to be able to put the new user id and password into your router, mind. There's a tech support number (0871 230 9309) who might be able to help the half-way tecchies on that...

Poor show, all round, I think.
