do I have to send in a tax return?

This may seem a silly question but I'm young and inexperienced so just checking...I have tax taken out of my wages by my employers (I have two jobs), do I have to send in a tax return?

I assumed self-assessment was for the self-employed etc, but after all the reminders in the media lately to get your tax return in before Jan 31st-thought it was better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks for your time everyone.

  • You will not need to complete a tax return unless you have been sent one. If your 2 jobs mean you earn more than £100,000 then you will need to complete a tax return (if only!).The other reasons people need to complete a tax return is if they have other income from renting a property..claim expenses over £2500..have additional allowances due to their age but do not receive the full allowance. All of which I doubt apply to you. It may still be worth you asking for your tax to be checked though as you have 2 jobs..you may have overpaid tax!
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

Agree with sarah, and here's why. If both jobs are part-time and low paid, then it's possible you're not earning more than your personal allowance in your main job. Your second job will be taxing you on ALL your income, but in reality, might not need to be.

Definitely worth a call to your local tax office and see what they say: they are usually very helpful. And I think if they send out a tax return late - as they would be in your case - you don't have to have it back by 31 Jan. Don't know how much time they give you - check!

Highly unlikely that (from the information provided so far) a self assessment tax return would be issued, so no worries about deadlines. You can just claim any refunds by asking them and sending in any documents they ask for.
