Faulty good return question

Hi all,

I got a surround system from argos for christmas (bought on Christmas eve). Since i got it i set it up and it was working okay. Now one of the speakers is humming and no other sound is coming out. i have the receipt. I still have the box and manuals, but i have to take it all down and re-package it etc. I was just wondering if i return it (which i take it i can) can i get vouchers or a credit note instead as i don't wanna get another one and set it all up for it to break again, i just can't be bothered taking the chance.

any advise welcome!

Cheers

Chris

If its faulty and you have the receipt they should refund rather then just offer vouchers/credit note.
  • in the new catalogue the return procedure is more clearly marked out now in the back near the index :)
  • If an item is faulty then it is not of satisfactory quality for the purposes of the Sale of Goods Act and it is your statutory right to reject the goods and receive a full refund. Given that the system was purchased just over a month ago it is probably covered by a guarantee too, but in any event return it to Argos with the box, receipt etc and they should refund you no problem. Just politely explain that it doesn't work properly and they shodl be fine. Please post back as I'd be interested to see how you get on.

EDIT: GAH! I've just seen that OP is based in N.Ireland, so Sale of Goods Act probably does not apply but I'm sure there must be an equivalent Act.

No i'm pretty sure you're right. The sale of goods act applies over here. It is a Uk act. Ins't it?

I'll let you know how it goes.

On a point of order, if the goods are faulty, it is not strictly necessary to have the receipt. We are talking about statutory rights here, and as long as you can show the goods were bought from the seller, that's good enough. So the fact that they are their brand, or you have a witness who can confirm the sale, are enough. A receipt is helpful, of course, but it isn't the end of the world if it is lost.

You don't really need the box/packaging but it can help :)
  • Yes, neither receipt nor box are necessary, but it helps to show that you are a responsible and respectable citizen and not someone who is "trying it on". It's been a long time since I worked in retail but I can remember some of the people who tried to bring things back. Best story I ever heard was when a friend who worked in a sports shop had someone trying to bring back a smelly old pair of trainers which hadn't been stocked by them for years and looked like they'd been up Everest and back, saying that they wanted their money back!

    Hi,

just for anyone who cares, took it back got a refund no problemo. i gotta say Argos is a pleasure to deal with. It's why i wouldn't hesitate to shop with them again. :j
  • Just a quick note

I used to work in Argos & so know there returns policy inside & out.

Most items are available for return (even if you just don't want it) upto 16 days after purchase upon production of recipt. There are certain items exempt from this & this will be stated on the reciept as exempt from 16 day guarantee however ALL items bought from Argos have a 12 month return/refund guarantee should the item be faulty.

If they no longer stock the item or you don't want the same item again then you can ask for a full refund in cash (or credited to your credit/debit/Argos card). In the event they are waiting for more stock to come back in they will offer you Argos vouchers. Also if you pay for your item with Argos/High Street Vouchers they can only refund you with Argos Vouchers
