Bad time to be a journalist. BBC have made cut backs. My friend who lives in Bristol found a job at a news paper in Inverness! She moved all the way up there, 3 months later... redundant.

Just giving you an idea of the industry right now. I'm looking for TV work, that's pretty slow too.

Did you do any part time work at college and uni? Maybe you can continue in those areas for now. I'm trying Asda again, even though I really don't want to work there again! lol

When i was on JSA I always applied for jobs within the wider search area as I was so desperate for a job. I got no help looking for jobs from the jobcentre and was pretty much left to my own devices except the fortnightly "what papers are you looking in" questions.

does the job centre actually provide any help in looking for a job

it does! I've seen it with my own eyes. But I think they only help you if you don't help yourself!

I personally hope that if you try this trick, that once you sign on again they take steps to sanction you.

I am so glad I didn't waste my time and money at university. Back in 1999 I thought it was a complete waste of space.

Sorry but you only have yourself to blame for wasting thousands to join the dole queue. For your blatant plan of abusing the system I hope you never get the job you desire. There are many people out there far more worthier than you.

That's a bit unfair. It's not exactly her fault she's been on JSA for 6 months, it's the economic climate at the minute. I agree she should look at other jobs, but she didn't waste her time at uni, and neither did I. Her career may be on hold for now, but once it gets started she'll be making more money and be in a job she likes, rather than settling for anything.

Well the OP clearly states their intention of bending the system because they think they are better than the work out there.

I was out of work due to illness this time last year. Guess what. I found a job on the JobCentre Plus website. You'd never guess....it's the best job I've ever had as well.

If you look hard enough you will find.

like i said, the OP needs to think about applying for other jobs and not ones of her prefered area
  • Where are you looking for jobs? I left university with a degree in Journalism 2.5 years ago and walked straight into a job. Since then I've walked straight into three other jobs, each better than the last. I still keep an eye on jobs and there's loads of editoral jobs around, especially down south.

You need to broaden your horizons - Journalism....you can do proof reading, copywriting, communications, PR.

I'd love to be the media officer for the football club I support or be a Sky Sports presenter, but in reality, the chances of me getting that are very low! :)

Although with a Journalism degree and qualified by the NCTJ, my jobs have been PR executive, travel copywriter, IT magazine copywriter and now a SEO role.

Can I also ask your experience? If you haven't got any experience, you're likely to be considered for roles when there are other people with the same education, but have given up their time to get work experience.

If you're not working, can I suggest you do work experience - this got me my first jobs in the media, as they were impressed with my enthusiasm.

I went to college and done a legal secretarial course and as I didn't get any work in that area, I went into retail, and I don't regret doing so.
