Can you be sacked whilst waiting to be made redundant?

My BF was told in December that he will be made redundant sometime between then and March. The place where he works will definitely cease to be run by the current organisation at the end of March and therfore, they will have no work for him and the other staff.
It's a small number of people so I don't think there needs to be a formal consultation process. However, the atmosphere is bad and has been for some time. All staff are very stressed, mistakes are being made and there was already very much a 'blame culture'. The general feeling amongst the staff is that management are now actively looking for ways to sack people rather than make them redundant.

Yes of course. Being in the consultation process does not remove from you any responsbility regarding doing the job properly.
If its fair or not is another story as sacking someone removes the need to pay them redundancy money (assuming any is to be paid and the employee is elgigible).

You can be sacked while off sick.
There is a procedure to follow, but you can be sacked.
(Its usually along the lines of high sickness means you are incapable of doing your job).

Tell your BF to be very careful re his behaviour and work output. It sounds like management are being very sneaky but I doubt if they would want to involve themselves in the disciplinary process. But you never know and management are capable of the most bizarre/stupid/pointless/idiotic things. From personal experience I only trust management as far as the next pay cheque.
