When can you apply for a remortgage?

Morning everyone,

My tracker ends in June and and i am just wondering, when is the earliest you can apply and agree a remortgage? I am currently with HBOS and i think i will plan on staying with them by moving onto one of their fixed rate deals.

So i am wanting my next mortgage deal to start on about 1st July 2009, so i am wondering can i start talking to banks and agreeing the start date of the deal would be the 1st July? Is 6 months before way too soon anf they wont do it or can i get this sorted now?

The reason for the question is because i am getting married in august and so want to get everything with the mortgage sorted as much before

Thanks

The average mortgage deal these days seems to be valid for 3 months from the date of offer

  • ah ok, perfect. So if i want a mortgage to start on say the 1st July, then i should start looking around the 1st April. Is it possible to have the 2, 3 or 5 year deal to actually begin on 1st july?

So for a 2 year example, to apply and agree in 1st April 2009 for a mortgage to start on 1st July 2009 and then to end on the 30th June 2011?

    Thanks

The actual day you switch mortgage will depend on the solicitors and your instructions to them - however if you start this far in advance there is no reason why you should not be able to start on the day you want. Just make sure that the lender you go with will issue an offer letter long enough to reach the start date you want

As to when the new deal finishes will depend on the type of deal i.e. if it has a defined end date to it i.e. 30/09/2011, or if it is 2 years from the day of completion

If you're staying with HBOS they won't offer you a deal until 3 months before yours expires. I think it is around the 28th of the month so 28 March or so. You could phone them up and ask to be sure. Solicitors etc are only involved if you remortgage with another bank which you say you dont' want to do.
  • Perfect! Thanks for your help
