would it be worth going br for?

Options
hi all.
not been here for a long while.

i am seriously thinking about going br. i owe £5k and am on benefits. i tried keeping up repayments but i just seem to be sinking deeper and deeper into the brown stuff.
i have no assets, yet everyday i get phone calls from creditors pestering for money that i haven't got. i have 1k rent arrears, 2k credit card debts which are both defaulted. gas bill debt of 500. water bill debt of 500 and an overdrawn bank acct with 1.2k overdraft. (bank charges £48 month)

it is my own fault i got myself in this mess, as i am alcoholic which i have just started receiving treatment/counselling for.

real life tells me to stay and fight this, yet my instincts tell me to gather my kids up and just run for the hills....

i just don't know where to begin.

Hi cazkenton. Have you spoken to any of the debt charities like CCCS, National Debtline or CAB? Its hard to say what is worth going BR for but if you can't cope with the debt that is usually a sign.

Are you in council accommodation or private rented?

Hi cazkenton, I second FYP and you should get advice from one of the charities to see what the best option is.

It is not about fault on here, it is about recognising the need to sort the situation out and I think that you are doing that and doing it well. so give yourself some credit for trying to fix things. :T

  • FYP - I am in private rented. £775 a month and HB doesn't pay all of this. I have to make up £50 month shortfall.
Not spoken to any debt charity yet, but plan on making a few calls tomorrow and getting this mess sorted out once and for all.

  • With the amount of hassle I am getting currently, I don't think I can hold off until April. I am toying with the idea of getting a CallerID thing for my phone. I had to change my mobile number. When I pick up the phone and it's a creditor, 'I am not in, it's her sister, can I take a message?' Even my kids decline the calls and tell them I'm not home/in the bath/sleeping/not well etc etc
They just seem to want more and more each month which I cannot pay.
How long would a BR take from start to finish?

It will depend whether your county court does a walk in service or an appointment service. If an appointment service then it depends on when there are appointments free. Some are looking at next week, some are looking at March.
