New Job & Car Allowance

Hi All

Have tried reading through all the treads, but can someone please help.

I started a new job in Febuary 2008 and on average using my own car do about 131 miles per week (excluding travel to my first client - last client and home again). Apart from my hourly rate of pay I do receive a payment of 28p per client which I pay tax on. Which is per client not per mile. Will I be able to claim petrol allowance. Also will this be adjusted through my wage at the end of the tax year or will I have to apply for a claim form.

Thanks

Sue

  • if you use your own vehicle for work use (not including commuting) you can claim tax relief of 40p per mile up to 10,000 miles, then 25p per mile there after, minus what your employer has already paid you. you will need to keep a mileage log the area office will require this. you would need to wait untill april then download a form p87 from www.hmrc.gov.uk for 08/09. if your claim ends up being in excess of "2500 do not complete a p87. call your area office as you would be required to complete a self assesment tax return.

If you paid tax in 2007/08 you do have a claim for Feb and March and the first week in April 2008. That could be worth about £100 to you.
If you didn’t pay tax in 2007/08 then don’t make the mistake of adding your 2007/08 mileage to your 2008/09 claim when you make it.
