To be perfectly honest it's always been that way, they just werent enforcing it properly before. They should get their computer systems sorted so they cant take off irrelevant coupons

The self service tills will not take coupons for items not purchased, but I don't know if the other tills are programmed that way now.

At my Tesco Express, Tesco's own money off vouchers are only accepted on exact product purchase - is this blanket Tesco policy-or different in other Tescos?

I used to have two large Tescos near me who both took money off coupons without having to buy the product. They have both said they have changed their policy and now only accept if products specified are bought. Have tried different SAs but looks like they've really clamped down on this. This happened in the past 4 weeks so I wondered if its some national change, but other MSE'ers have continued using their coupons.

I've never been successful at Tesco Express/Metros. They've always been really picky and only accepted coupons if you've bought the product, and even then if its printed from the internet some coupons have been turned down

I'm sorry for the confusion caused with regards to the acceptance of money off coupon policy and Tesco accepting the other supermarkets vouchers. I can appreciate the inconvenience caused.

I have detailed below some information on the acceptance of coupons in our stores which I hope will help you.

All Tesco specific coupons display the Tesco logo. We'll only accept these at the till if you buy the product shown on the coupon at the time.

We're happy to accept a non-Tesco product coupon even if you don't buy the item. But, the coupon must be in date and Tesco must sell the product. If you present more than one identical coupon you need to purchase the same number of products. This also includes coupons printed from the Internet, but these will only be accepted at the discretion of the Store Manager.

I'm also pleased to confirm that we're accepting coupons for the other major supermarkets, both in-store and for our online Grocery service.

Just hand your coupons to your driver when your groceries are delivered. The money-off coupon will be refunded to your payment card within 14 days.

There are some conditions for using these coupons, so I've listed them below.

    1. We can only accept other major supermarkets' branded coupons for money off your total transaction.
    2. We cannot accept coupons valid only for specific products or departments.
    3. We can only accept up to £15 worth of coupons for one delivery.
    4. You must have met any requirements on the coupon, such as a minimum spend.
    5. We can only accept them against Grocery deliveries. We can't accept them for deliveries from our other online stores.
    6. We may refuse to accept coupons if they appear to be damaged, defaced, altered or copied.

We cannot accept coupons for purchases of tobacco or infant milk formula.

I hope this has helped to explain things for you and thank you for taking the time to ask us about this.

Just re-read the email and this bits seems open to debate

Does that mean online shopping codes from other supermarkets I wonder?
Ocado have a £15 off online shop at the moment.
    Anyone know?

I worked at Sainsbury's as a temp over Christmas and we were told it's only if they buy the item, but it was so busy and people were buying so much I couldn't be bothered to check so I just scanned them anyway. And sometimes when items wouldn't scan I just pretended they had and passed them through because the supervisors were such a-holes. I hated working there.

There was one time I gave an old lady £50 cashback without putting it through the till. That was an accident, a supervisor was messing about putting change in my till at the time and I got flustered. Still, nice Christmas present for her.

gosh wish you worked at our sainsburys:D

Our Asda always took 10% of the shopping cost in vouchers but this week she would only take two of them, about 4 % worth.
