Really enjoy my job, but making cut backs

I've been in my current job for six months and really enjoy it. However, we've recently been having a lot of meetings and sudden company updates about cutting costs all through the business. Today we were also asked to spend a percent of time ringing customers (I'm in an SEO editorial role) to get more money. Obviously, redundancy leaps to mind as it has with everyone. I was made redundant last January after a merger, so see the signs. I would be one of the first to go since I've not been here very long.
Now, my questions is...I've seen a really great job at my local council that I think I'd really enjoy. I love my current job, but should I maybe "proof" my position and apply for this job just in case?

There is nothing wrong with continuing to apply for jobs. if you get another job then you can make a more informed decision. In the meantime keep all your options open.0

Thanks for your advice, it backs up what I thought too. Just with the company cutting every cost possible and making us do other bits to get money in, it doesn't look too good!
This other jobs is also ALOT more than I'm on (10K), but I have all the experience and qualifications they ask for - might as well have a go!

You can always turn it down if they offer it to you0
