if you've a few big organisations nearby there is usually no harm in sending a CV and letter detailing what sort of work you are after, pretty much all companies with a few hundred employees will have helpdesk functions, also shows some initiative and potentially gets you in to the top of the pile for any jobs coming up (also stuff like Leicester Uni/ Walkers and from a quick google Royal Mail, AstraZeneca, Caterpillar (UK), Pedigree Masterfoods, McVites Group, Alliance & Leicester and Next Retail Ltd but no idea where they are location wise) Banks i.e A&L are always a good bet, most likely various IT departments due to the way the industry works websites/programming/helpdesk/desktop support

That's cool. Have you given much thought to what you want to do? As you've said web development, but 2nd line support could be an option. What languages can you program in?

Have you thought much about your cv? I see a lot of cvs and I probably reject a lot of good candidates as they don't represent themselves well in their cvs.

You see this is the problem, any major work on the website they pay a different company to do, hence I have only made minor changes etc. I have used a bit of asp, php, html & javascript but thats about my limit. I did quite a bit of Visual Basic at school (few different programs such as diary, Accounts system for a window cleaner ( Dont ask).

I think my CV is ok, I've used a few sites off the web to get recommendations etc - but one of my mates sent a list of all his qualifications and a letter that basically said "you can see im qualified, the best thing to do is give me an interview" and he got the job ???????

The ones Ive applied for are: 2 x "software support", "Telesales - Hardware/software advisor" & "Database administrator" (Think this ones a bit to high for me, but worth a shot.

Never thought about applying to companies that where not advertising for positions.

  • I would include on your cv a small personal profile at the top. This just needs to be a few sentences summarising what you are looking for. Next I would do a skill summary, so list those skills that you mentioned and ideally either level of experience or years of experience.

As well as searching the job boards I mentioned, put your CV on there for employers to search. You will be contacted if you do this by both employers and recruitment agencies. I quite often don't advertise vacancies as I get a lot of time wasters, I will approach people who have put their cvs on these boards.

I'm lucky in that I go for the roles that require SC clearance so the foreign imports don't get a look in.
Only had a 3 month break in jobs in the last 3 yrs since leaving the forces
