Hi I'm going to York this weekend with my boyfriend and I was wondering what there is to do. We are staying Friday and Sat so will have Friday night, all-day Saturday to explore. Any hints.

GHOST WALK! go to the one near the art gallery, not the gimmicky one with the guy dressed up0

The Minster but you have to pay.
The Railway museum is interesting even if your not into trains.
York Castle Museum well worth a visit
Walk around the walls
The Shambles seems to be popular with tourists"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

When you need a cup of tea and a nice sit down Bettys is the place to do it !

Agree with all of the above!! Plus the Railway Museum is free and the last time I was there you could go on the Yorkshire Eye (York's equivalent to the London one but not quite as big!) - you do have to pay for this though.
The Minster is lovely. I also really like walking around the walls so would recommend that.
Hope you have a great time - I really love York as you can probably tell!!:rotfl: Will have to go again soon.0 -
I agree with Horrorhag, you should definatly go for a ghost walk! There are a few in town - I know a couple of the blokes that run them and they are both fantastic!!
The railway museum is ok, (and Free!! very mserish) if you like trains I guess! Yorkvik viking centre is ok, it doesn't take long to get round providing there's no big queue. The Dungeon is always a good laugh and as has been mentioned the walls are great for a different view of York.
There's also a lot of pubs! depending what you prefer, noisey town pubs (blegh) or nice cozy ones. I can recommend the Blackswan on peasholm green, it's one of the oldest pubs in town and has got a lot of history to it, it's even said to be haunted ...0 -
There are loads of things!
If you want to do a lot of the museums/sight seeing, it might be worth getting the the york pass, gives a lot of discounts and free entries.

Living room is pretty good for food, and if you sign up with them on their website you can get a printable voucher for 50% off your food bill. Loads of great old pubs, I agree about the Black Swan, very good! The Blue Bell is tiny but good if you can get in, very central too on Fossgate. The Minster is interesting but ridiculously expensive!
The Yorkshire museum is pretty good, and is situated in Museum Gardens which is a beautiful place to be, as long as it isn't raining. Betty's for a cuppa has to be done! Although early morning and late evening (they are open till 9pm) are best to avoid the queues.0 -
How about a cruise on the Ouse... or be energetic and hire a paddle boat!He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

I love York and feel lucky that its only down the road from me, although only been to my regional office based there for meetings the last few times I have been.
I would agree with going to Living Room for something to eat, its soo lovely, the food and service are great.
For a laugh I would say to go to the Dungeons, its little mini sets with actors and is quite scary but good fun.
The minster is lovely to go and see even if you don`t go in.
There are also loads of nice shops to browse in, Browns department store is good for bags, makeup etc and take a walk along the shambles for smaller non-chain shops.
Another great place to eat is The Roman Baths pub, they do huge sandwiches and chips - it does get really full tho.
Also check out The Golden Fleece pub its only tiny but has been featured on Most Haunted.
Hope this helps.0 -
Alas the big wheel is no more.
Castle Museum is great and a trip on the Ouse is well worth a mention but wrap up, its usually cold.
Have a look down the shambles and take a photo from the top.
You will love it and its a well known fact that it is impossible to get lost in York. Have a great time.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
