is submitting a tax return necessary?

Im confused. My husband has been retired for 5 years, claims a private pension and state pension and continues to submit a tax form each year. Is this really necessary? My neighbour with the same circumstances has never submitted a tax form?

Would not have though it necessary at all - sometimes it is really difficult to get out of the system Is there any possiblity that your husband's income would be such that it may be necessary to calculate age allowance every year? Otherwise, I would be telephoning in order to ask to be removed from the SA system
  • If his income is covered by the annual personal allowance then there is no need for him to be completing tax returns.
As previous poster says, he should contact the Inland Revenue and request them to close his record.

If your husband is 65 years or over he is eligible to receive an extra personal allowance called age allowance, see here - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm

However age allowance is means tested and some pensioners are entitled to all of it, some are entitled to some of it and some are not entitled to any because their income is so high. Those people who are entitled to some of it are required to complete a tax return every year so that HMRC can ensure that they have paid the correct amount of tax.

If this does not apply then as ceeforcat says it would be a good idea to contact his tax office.
