Just found out my tax return was never recieved

Like a good little boy I got all my tax return stuff sent off to my accountant nice and early last year. He did whatever he said he does (im clueless about all of this kind of thing) and said that he would send the return off on my bahalf.

By sheer fluke, I found out today that my paper tax return has NOT been filed, which means the online one has to be filed by the 31st.

My accountant is a good bloke and Im waiting for him to get back to me, but in the meantime as I cant stop thinking about it:

*He has all my receipts for my expenses, I assume he is supposed to keep them in case of things like this?
*Can he file my online tax return on my behalf?
*Is he liable if anything bad happens, ie. if i need to provide evidence of my receipts

Naturally Im just mulling over all the worse case scenarios in my mind, mainly that I wont be able to prove my expenses and have to pay way more than I thought.

  • I work in an accountants, I assume he would still have all your paperwork there. Assuming he is filing online for other clients, I would think he could do yours online - as long as he has your UTR.

It sounds like maybe your paper return has been sent in and lost by the revenue - that's happened a lot here! If not, then I'd ask your accountant why it wasn't sent in if you got your books in early - if it was after October though he wouldnt have been able to send a paper one anyway, it would have had to go online.

Try not to worry, I'm sure there will be a logical explanation.

You could also pay the tax due by 31 Jan to avoind a penalty.
You will only have to produce receipts if you are investigated.
£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths
  • Thanks very much guys, I got all my stuff in last April, Im sure he will be able to file it online on my behalf, thankfully I have all the log in details

Also, thankfully I paid the amount owed earlier this month

    Cheers for the quick replys
  • thats good news - your accountant will have agent log in details for his firm so he probably won't even need your personal details.

I wish all our clients were as organised as you! ;)
  • Just spoke to him, it turns out he always files the return online in one batch in January. Phew

Seems a waste of time me submitting all my stuff so early in a way lol
