Giving someone your bank account number and sort code

Hi, I am due to be paid some money and the person has asked of they can do an internet transfer and that to do so they will need my back account number and sort code. Is that safe to give someone that information?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me on this one.

whenever you write a cheque you give someone your sort code and account number
  • Your sort code and account number are written on a cheque and your debit card, so it should be fine.

There was that Jeremy Clarkson incident when someone set up a DD for £500 as he printed his sort code and account number in the press, but for the rest of us who aren't broadcasting the information you should be OK.

    Absolutely as above!

In addition, a DD mandate would require the same info, have you set any of those up?

In order to access your account online somebody would need a lot more information and withdrawing monry in person would require a bank card and/or ID and a signature.

If you are still worried then ask them to send a cheque, withdraw all of your money and put it under your bed.

    ;)

    Thanks all,

You have all been very helpful, although sometimes (what with card fraud and the like) I do feel things would perhaps be so much more simple if I did go back to keeping money under my bed, but I have not done that since I was 9 years old and in pigtails, so maybe not :-)

Yes, but he was covered by the DD guarantee, so there's no real risk involved. As mentioned, we've been sending cheques to strangers for centuries.
  • My sort code is 40 05 30
    Account number 51535293

Feel free to put in some money :)

  • Jeekah, my DS was in a similar situation. Luckily, when he opened his current account the bank clerk suggested that he also opened a second reserve account and kept a few pounds in it for an emergency, such as the ATM swallowing his main account card. If asked for an account number DS always gives the back up A/C number, that way no one knows his main account number.

Didn't Jeremy Clarkson find himself inadvertantly donating to charity recently when he published his bank details?

Would this be possible due to his address being known?
