Benefits for 22yr old in college

My 22yr old son is at college 3days a week, and works for 3days. As from the end of the month his working hours are being cut as the company will no longer be working Saturdays. He will soon be out of work all together as the company are gradually finishing all the temps. He still lives at home. Will he be entitled to any kind of benefits if he can't find another job, either because, his hours have been cut or when he has no job at all?

Can claim JSA once out of work + (council tax, housing benefit) can also claim JSA if he earns very little say and sign on JSA to top upto a total of £47 something a week for his age. If he claim JSA then he will be made (the rule) to actively seeking work.
  • He can't claim JSA whilst still at college unless he's prepared to give it up when offered a job.

If he claims JSA he'll be asked to sign that he's prepared to leave his course if he gets a job. Provided he is seen to be doing all the right things, as far as job hunting goes, he should be able to manage to finish this academic year without dropping out.

If his hours are reduced he can still apply for they days he is not working, but as Oldernotwiser says, he will need to sign that he is willing to leave college to take full time work.

as been mentioned he could apply for jsa once he is out of work but it would depend if your son is willing to leave the course for a full time job

Without wishing to suggest anything fraudulent I'd just like to emphasise that he has to be willing to SAY he'll leave the course if he gets a job. Finding a suitable job can take several months even at the best of times!;)
