I think it's more a matter of what rather than where.

Marks and Spencers own brand beaujolais.(pink/purple top) £5.50 a bottle.
Damnably better than most of those 20 quid bottles - IMO!

Gazur ( Ribera del Duero) £13 - which I don't think you can get north of Dublin..
  • I tend to manage to consistently get some good wines in Tesco. Check out Casa Lapostolle (Chilean Merlot) ... it's on the top shelf in Knocknagoney. Tesco do it for £8.99 a bottle but occasionally it's been on offer at half price ..... a fabulous wine recommended to me by a wine 'buff'. Ogio Pinot Grigio's another good one, especially when it's half price down to £4.

The Vineyard is one of my favourites. Good selection, very knowledgable staff, a few out of the ordinary wines, beers and spirits.

James Nicholson's is an odd place. Full of 'loveys and darlings' discussing how much their skiing holiday is costing them and whether little Tamsin is going to go to Pony Club this summer. A few good wines and lots of expensive ones. Not such a good 'New World' selection as elsewhere.

I think the wine shop on Stranmillis is called Belfast Wine Company?

I think it may be closed now? Last time I passed, it looked like it might be vacant (shutters were down but had that 'empty' look about it) and there was an estate agents sign on the building.

You can't go far wrong with Direct Wine Shipments, in my opinion. We have had some spectacular wines from there. I can particularly recommend their Cru Celta which is produced by the owners own vineyard near Barcelona.

Mmm... if that's the one where the label has 3 holes in it
then I'd have to agree - it's really nice. Another vote here for the m+s beaujolais as well. Nice to hear a recommendation for the McAllinden wines. Seen a few leaflets about them - are they expensive?
  • The McAllinden Creu Celta is £16.99 a bottle. We were given a bottle and it was absolutely fantastic. Well worth the money I would say.

Chateau de la Ligne 2005 Cuvee Prestige is excellent (make sure it's the 2005 as the 2004 is not so good). It is made in Bordeaux, but the vineyard is owned by a Belfast man.

another vote for GAP wines on antrim road.
Small shop but huge range of wine. All the staff afre very knowledgeable and will
help you out if you need any advise.

    Superb selection of beers too.
I used to have a signature with links to the League Tables for good/bad shipping charges for Northern Ireland. But I have since learnt that this is against site rules - so they are no longer here! PM me if you need them

If you dont mind the drive, Jame Nicholson is Crossgar is independent and by many people in the industrys' standards, he one of the most knowledgeable connoisseurs in NI.

His staff were helpful when I was last in
David James aint got nothing on me
  • I have had very good experiences with Lidl wines. They are dirt cheap (well, it is Lidl) but very good. Spanish reds are my fave right now. Also, Loaded magazine got a real beer expert to rate cheap beers and Lidl came out top for them.

Other than Lidl and DWS, M&S are pretty reliable and reasonably priced. Tesco/Sainsbueys/Asda - more miss than hit.
