Well done :T Is chapatti flour very different from bread flour (which is what I use)

I'll add this to the existing thread on Indian breads.

    Penny. x

According to a Madhur Jaffrey book I have, it is very fine wholemeal flour which makes softer chapattis than using regular wholemeal flour.

I make puris...They are lovely and taste even better than restaurant ones. All you need it chapati flour, make as instructions and then fry in a few inches of oil for about 15 seconds each side. Pile them up and wrap them in foil and keep warm in the oven.

melliec, sounds intriguing...do you mean make chapatis but fry as you descrbed or do you have a puri recipe on your pack?
  • My advice?

Buy some from your local indian take away, then don't tell the stupid idiot

...but then I would be the "stupid idiot" when there is a cheaper more satisfying way of doing it.

Yes, a puri is basically a fried chapati. They do come ot better if rolled a bit thinner though. Actually, this way you could easily make chapatis and puris;)

It was some years ago now, but was an evening course ran by the local authority. It wasn't very expensive though can't remember the cost now, but I can remember it was free to anyone on benefits as my friend was claiming benefits at the time. If your huband's friend's wife has offered I think I'd sound her out about it as I'm sure she would probably be genuinely pleased that someone liked her cooking enough to want to learn more.

You could also do a swap. A friend of mine taught me how to make millionaire's shortbread a while back, as I wasn't sure about the fudge bit, and I've taught her to make jam in return (she does it better than me too!)
