Being Recorded at Work?

Bit of an odd one this.

I'm convinced my Boss is secretly recording me at work, in his office he has a coat stand and a few chairs, when he gets into work in the morning he takes off his suit jacket and hangs it on the back of one of the chairs in his office. After he has had his coffee he takes his suit jacket and hangs it on the back of a chair at one of the empty desks right beside where I sit.

Really strange behaviour if you ask me why doesn't he just leave it in his office? the reason I think he's recording me is in the past he's mentioned things which I felt at the time that I couldn't remember telling him, I've kept an eye on this and also made some comments to my collegue who sits beside me when he hangs his jacket out, within days he comments on what i've said e.g. I was speaking to my collegue about my girlfriend going away to Alton Towers with her friends, the boss commented a few days later asking me if she was back yet???

I don't get on with my boss, used to but he changed dramatically over the past year or so, he went from being able to work with to a total dictator, maybe i'm being paranoid but everytime you see him he has one of they digital voice recorders in his hand, he takes it everywhere with him.
Don't know what to do with this, should I wait for him to leave his jacket on the back of the chair beside me then go through his pockets?

    maybe i'm being paranoid

    And the rest!

At work you are you are a employee being paid to do a job. As a result you are representing the company in all you do.
made some comments to my collegue who sits beside me

Perhaps your colleague told your boss?
should I wait for him to leave his jacket on the back of the chair beside me then go through his pockets?

Picture the scene. The boss puts his coat on a chair and walks out.

    You then rifle through it.

    Whats next? P45?

Accidental spill a cup of coffee over it!!!
  • Health and safety makes jackets on chairs a potential safety risk. Maybe hang it up for him?

Accidentally brush past it and knock it off. Pick it up and put it back on making sure to smooth it out and dust any fluff off. A voice recorder would be noticeable bulk. Looks more innocent than rifling the pockets too!

I would be careful about doing anything to the jacket, if he is into recording he might also have a camera somewhere.

Is this before or after the change in your hours has been implemented?

I think it is illegal to record someone without their knowledge - I might be wrong but if he is doing it it is very strange behavious. He might be wanting an excuse to sack yu. Be careful waht you say and do and he will have to give up.

Perhaps he just leaves his coat with you because he is too lazy to hang it up.

Employers DO "spy" on staff....I know this from experience. But do be very careful. If they feel entitled to know what's what with you...then the reverse certainly applies....but do BE CAREFUL!!!!!! in establishing whether they are doing so or no.

The best advice you can get is to keep quiet. Do not talk about anything unless it is work related. It leads to an easier life.
If you enjoy the company of your work colleagues you can socialise in the evenings, but I would not challenge your boss or rifle through his jacket pockets.
If he is recording your conversations it will stop as there will be nothing to record!
