in Cutting tax
Ok so I will have to fill one in, although I could get away with it and not bother but I have paid tax that I want back!
Basically I am at uni, I have a job up here. Last summer I worked back at my previous job and worked my !!!! off and ended up paying NI and Income Tax. (I know I can't get back NI). I also worked at uni this tax year. Basically, different areas, no contact between the 2 HMRC offices so I have 2 tax codes. (pretty much both jobs have been ongoing for 2 years so no P45s or anything).
Now heres the money situation:
From the HMRC website- You need to fill in a tax return if you: have untaxed income of £2,500 or more
Job from Summer:
Gross: £1950.78
Income Tax Paid: £54.00 (NI £29.54 on top of this) - no refund I don't think from PAYE (I didn't get last payslip *sigh*), and I won't have put down for a P45 cause my employer would want me to go back some other time, so I am 'kept' on the books.
Current Uni Job:
Gross so far: £424.92
Tax Paid: NILL
Uni job I am still earning and therefore will more than likely go over the £2,500 threshold.
Thats all fine and dandy. Problem though, summer job is pretty rubbish so getting P60 from them will take months and months. Tax return form - will they believe me if I give them the figures rather than have the certificate? I can get P60 from uni job.
And finally, last month from uni job I got paid extra because I didn't use up holiday allowances, so it came into my pay - this is treated just as normal work pay yes?
Thanks....

The fact you aren't paying tax ..... doesn't, in this context, equate with you having 'untaxed income'.
And you certainly don't have to complete an SA Return .... based on your post. If I've read it correctly you have a Code number for each job ... and you've presumably not hit the tax threshold (ie exceeded the apportioned personal allowance) for the Uni job. Although I would have expected that to be BR if you've completed a P46? But potentially all a bit academic as doesn't look as though you will exceed your PA of £6035.
If you're still 'on the books' for the other job .... make sure you get that P60. You can't use an SA Return to expedite a refund! Not least in that the Return for this year isn't due until 31st Jan 10. So quicker to lean on the summer job for the P60?
P38 might be a future option for the Summer job?

And the holiday pay .... yes.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

No need to fill in a tax return.
My sons were in a similar situation whilst at uni. They had a part-time job during term time and were also getting a pension from their late father's scheme. Usually they paid too much tax over the course of the year.
All they had to do was apply each year for a rebate to HMRC. We were able to take the P60 from each to the local HMRC enquiry centre. They photocopied both P60s, gave them back and filled in the form asking for a rebate. A few weeks later they got their refund.
One year one of my sons lost his P60 and they did accept his payslips as it was taking a while to get a statement of earnings from his job. They do require proof usually.0 -
You are missing my point.
I have got 2 tax codes. 603L.
Which is my whole point of having to complete it, as my total income will be more than £2500 but not technically taxed (even though I did pay some).
P38 would be useless, the employers as I said, are crap.
But ok if you say I don't have to fill one in then I won't, I will just try and get my p60 from other job to get tax reclaimed.0 -

Are both tax codes 603L? If so you had better get onto HMRC immediately as only one job should be using the 603L code. The other job should be using BR. Either that or your allowances should be split over the two jobs.Which is my whole point of having to complete it, as my total income will be more than £2500 but not technically taxed (even though I did pay some).
With a total income of £2500 you shouldn't be paying tax anyway.P38 would be useless, the employers as I said, are crap.
If you are working during term time you can't complete a P38 anyway - this states that you will ONLY be working during holiday time. But ok if you say I don't have to fill one in then I won't, I will just try and get my p60 from other job to get tax reclaimed.
Tax return is not needed. However you do need to sort out the tax codes.0 -
Thing is theres no point in sorting it out because I am not going to be working at the other place anymore. I would get a P45 but thats going to be more effort than P60!
And yes I only paid tax because I was on PAYE and a number of weeks I earnt over the threshold, but it was never given back to me.
I will just wait until April, fill in reclaim form and post a note saying I will no longer be working there.
And I know I shouldn't be paying tax but it states that if you earn more than £2500 and don't pay tax you have to fill it in... which is currently what state I am in.... ?0 -

That statement is really only for those who are not on the PAYE scheme which you are.I would get a P45 but thats going to be more effort than P60!
You are entitled to it so chase it up.0 -

You do not meet self assessment criteria.
Before falling over yourself trying to get the P60, call the tax office that deal with your main employer. They may already have the details they need, and an assessment/repayment can be arranged over the phone.0 -
the 2,500 of untaxed income has nothing to do with having tax free income due to your personal allowance. Everyone resident in the UK can have up to 6,035 of tax free income this year and will not have to fill in an SA form because of it. Even if you earned 6,035 in both jobs and used up two personal allowances, you would still not need to fill in an SA form as HMRC would just reduce your allowance next year or the year after to get it back.
The 2,500 untaxed income rule you are refering to is for people who earn income not on the PAYE system. Going by what you have said here it seems very likely both jobs were on PAYE.0
