It is different in different gyms. I have had two, one of which was not great (just a basic intro to the equipment, very basic!) and the second of which was great. He took me round all the machines, helped me to work out a bit of a programme for what I wanted to do, talked to me about what my goals were etc. So be prepared for either. I remember being really worried about what to wear and in the end up wore loose jogging bottoms, a t shirt and trainers which was just about right.
Also remember that in a good gym it's fine to go back and ask for more help after the induction - better to get your technique right than to possibly risk doing yourself damage, especially with weights equipment.
For the first week or so you do feel like an outsider when you go but it does get better after that....lots of luck!0 -
In some gyms they stick you on the machines too to test your heart rate etc so be prepared for that too - and they really work you!

If you aren't happy, complain. My first induction was sort of like this and I wrote a nice polite email to their membership person explaining that i really did need a better induction than this. In the end up I got the top person in the place (who normally doesn't even do inductions!) and he was fantastic and spent an hour talking me through all the machines. As a result I've got another 4 people to join up, so it was worth their while.
Give it a go, what have you got to lose?0 -
