I'm looking at an Dyson 08 Animal with Hepa filter. Was also looking at 05 with hepa and 11 to. I wondered what the differences were other than the tech info on dysons site and where is the cheapest place to by new or second hand or if there are beter vacuums for people who suffer with allergies? Thanks

I have 2 dysons and yes they are good for filtering until you come to empty them. No matter how hard I try I get a cloud of dust, I even empty them inside a carrier bag and still get loads of dust. Also the plastic bits become brittle and break. If you look on ebay you will see a lot of people selling spare parts, I understand that it is a common fault with Dysons. Mine are DC05's the pull along type. The main problem has been the plastic bits on the end of the extension poles - I have 3 of those which have broken and I am not a maniac when it comes to hoovering!! I promise.0

Thanks for the advice. Do you know whether one can add a filter to the DC05 model without Hepa filter? and an airflow powered turbine head to one without?cotsvale wrote:I have 2 dysons and yes they are good for filtering until you come to empty them. Paul if you have any Somerfields by you ring them up first and ask if they have any DC11s left. They were doing an offer a few weeks back for a DC11 cylinder for £99 (in argos then for around £249).I picked one up and its a dream to use. Ring a few up ,you might just get lucky.Moneysaving? - I cant stop spending because of this site!0

It would be worth checking out the range of Miele vacuums. Although a little more expensive, they knock spots off the (dreadful) Dyson, IMO.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

I'm on my 3rd Dyson and I thoroughly recommend them - especially if you have allergies; I'm allergic to house dust mites.
I currently have a DC14 Animal (upright) which comes with a turbine head for removing pet hairs. It's the easiest model to empty and the dust box opens at the bottom at the click of a button. I usually empty it into a plastic bag and haven't experienced dust clouds as cotsvale has, as long as you close the bag gently. It's also got a lifelong hepa filter and a washable filter. I'm delighted with this model and purchased it a year ago from Tesco online - where I saved around £70 in comparison to Curry/Comet's prices.
Once I'd got the DC14, I attached the turbine head to my older DC03/DC01 models and found there's not enough power in the older models to drive it. However, you can buy a mini turbine head for the DC05 here.
Hope this helps.
PS: Although I'm on my 3rd Dyson, the other 2 are still working perfectly - I just wanted to upgrade! I gave one away and have kept one for a back-up, just in case."He who asks questions cannot avoid the answers"0
