My Morgan Stanley card has no chip so I checked with a few shops who said "We cannot accept it after <various dates>". No quarter given; get a chipped card or go away.
OK, quick call to Morgan Stanley who said "We would have sent one when your card expired" (long past 14 Feb) but no problem". Later I get a call from my wife out shopping; card refused and a check with Morgan Stanley showed they had marked it as stolen.
Morgan Stanley card cannot have its PIN changed at an ATM. Who knows what will happen when I send them the paperwork :-)

Some banks will issue able bodied customers with Chip & Signature (PIN Suppressed) cards on request.
These are identical to Chip & PIN cards so should be accepted everywhere yet when you come to pay you will be asked to sign. They will work after Valentine's Day.
Chip & PIN has serious limitations, not least the transfer of liability for fraud in practical terms to the cardholder (you!). Read more here: http://www.chipandspin.co.uk/0 -
I have an Amex card that has no chip. I called them recently and they also said that they will send a card when it reaches the expiry date but will this card work after Feb 14th or not?0

Yes they are great for people with memory problems such as me :T0 -
I used to have the same PIN number for two different Visa cards - the debit card for the ATM, and the cashback credit card (yes, OK, I know, not really good practice anyway). Absent-mindedly took the wrong one out of the wallet at the ATM, got walloped £5 for a cash withdrawal (so will have to spend £500 to break even....?!).
To prevent it happening again, I've changed the PIN no on the credit card so I can't accidentally use it in an ATM. I pass the idea on in case it prevents someone else from the same accidental extravagance!

i went to a particular shop just before christmas. Went to pay for my card. They asked me to sign. I hadn't written my signature on the back of the card (because I thought we don't need to now for safety reasons). I was told they couldn't accept the card because it hasn't been signed and asked for extra proof of identity - blah blah blah. I argued with them saying that they should be offering chip and pin and i don't need to sign. Stalemate!

Tough one, I worked for a retailer which has only introduced chip & pin in the last few months. Before that I would get the odd card that the holder hadnt signed. I did request ID on each occasion which was willingly given - the retailer is liable for any fraud if they are not using chip & pin, so they are right to protect themselves by requesting more ID.
It seems that most of the larger non c&p retailers are finally getting to grips with it so this will become less of an issue.0
