Should I get married in UK or Italy?

Options
Hi, I got engaged on Xmas day (still getting over the shock!). My boyfriend is Italian (we met when I was living out there) and we are trying to decide whether to get married in the UK or over there. We haven't worked out a budget yet but it is likely to be fairly tight as we bought a flat last year. We have similar numbers of family/friends in each country and I think most would be prepared to travel.
Has anyone had a similar experience of an "international" wedding? Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated
Thank you to all who post comps and good luck to all who enter :j

    Hi Polesana,

My brother married in Italy. My Mum had more involvement in the preparations and she has told me recently that my brother's was far more complicated than mine, paperwork wise. Now one important thing, my Brother's wedding was at a Catholic church, so if you're not set on a church wedding, it may be easier to have a more civil ceremony. I'd look into the technicalities and maybe speak to your boyfriend's family and friends who are already married.

    Best of luck.
  • Hi Polesana,

COngratulations on your engagement. My bf is also italian, and we have decided to get married in the UK. :) - no exact dates in mind yet.

one thing you must consider is whether you want a religious ceremony, or just a civil one. If you want a religious ceremony, getting married in italy may be a bit og a headache if you are not a catholic. - you will need dispensation for virtually everything!...if you do decide to get married there, speak to his parish priest as soon as possible. :)

as for me, i have decided to get married here in the UK. :) we will hold a full ceremony here in the UK, (although we most of our friends are not in the UK) with a reception in Italy after the honeymoon, in addition to a banquet in Malaysia. :)

    Hi Polesana,

    congrats on your engagement.
Attended a civil wedding in Italy a short while back. It was lovely. I think it was no more or less of a headache than organising the same type of wedding here. The main difference being that the Bride had to visit Italy a few more times than normal but going home more was not a problem.
We all had extended stays so had a short break aswell.
    Good luck
