Notice Period - Information/advice needed

A friend of mine has resigned their job on Monday, giving a three month notice, as per their letter of employment. If their employer insists they leave prior to the 3 months notice period does that mean they still have to pay the salary that would have been due. All advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.
