  • There is a good NHS dentist at the Kath Locke centre on Moss Lane (Adrian), he also has a private practise in Chorlton, but the Moss Side one is NHS.

    1) Hairdressers- there are quite a few barbers type places that do student prices right up and down wilmslow rd

    2) Dentists- I use one in Bramhall as couldn't get one locally!

    3) Doctors- Surrey Lodge Group Practise on Anson road- all the Drs are really really nice.

    4) Shopping (food, groceries!)- For something different try Venus Supermarket- it's a Turkish foodstore and is extremely well stocked, great for fresh fruit and veg, herbs (they have huge bunches of coriander, mint, parsley etc v cheap), a whole aisle dedicated to olives and pickles, plus they have a pastries counter and meat counter. You can still get your milk and eggs there too aswell as sugar, coffee etc. Oh and Efes beer- 59p a bottle! It's on Anson Rd.

    5) Electrical goods (tv etc.) You are probably best going to Asda in Hulme!

    6) Dry cleaners (suits for work) There's a little old guy in Rusholme on the corner of Platt Lane/Dickenson Rd/Wilmslow Rd, it's a red painted shop.

    7) Gym- Agree re Sugden Centre and Aquatics Centre. If you want swanky, try GL14 which is at the city end of Wilmslow Rd. It's nice but I don't think it fits in with a student's budget!

    8) Anything else...Punjabs on the Curry mile is the best, authentic Indian restaurant on the row.

  • The best place for kebabs is Saajan just across from the Friendship Inn in Fallowfield. I am really fussy and this is the only place in Manchester I think I would eat a kebab in.

Two bars I've been to recently which have special offers on drinks

    1. Room - King Street - really glamorous bar, very impressive - bottles £2 and wine £2 a glass between 5.30 and 7. Also have half price main courses between 5 and 7 also.

    2. Obsidian - Princess Street - if you get a bar club card you will get Peroni at £2 a bottle, spirit and mixer at £2.50, house wine at £7.50 a bottle.

I really like these places as I sick of run of the mill pubs/bars in Manchester City Centre.
  • Hi mate, welcome to the place to be!

For a gym go to the University one in the Didsbury campus of the met. It's very cheap I think it's a tenner a month or something or like some one mentioned earlier the armitage.

I get mates to shave me hari so cant advise you on teh salon's but sure some bird can tell you, if you want a nice kebab try kobeda's from teharab places in rusholme as opposed to the ten-a-penny asian ones.

Fallowfield bars are usually reasonably priced but if you go into town I prefer the locks or prohibition down the side of kendals or cloud 23 in the hilton tower, I'd go lidl or aldi for the shopping but the quality's not great so asda in longshite-i.e longsight should seal the deal.

    Cheers mate

    Good luck

  • Aside from what I heard is the UK's biggest Aldi, there's a Quality Save in picadilly gardens that's full of bargins! It's just near where all the buses gather. Rudest staff in the world but cheap.

Gyms: the Sugden centre (Grovensor St) have an offer on membership at the minute (not sure if it's a student-only offer) and so do Ballantyne's (Whitworth St, city centre) - it's something like join for a pound.

Doctors: Bodeys Medical Centre, opposite MacDs in Fallowfield is good

Dry cleaners: Mr Bubbles in Fallowfield is still there (it's further down than Abduls). It's okay but the good offers lure you in then you can't put certain items in on offer eg so many items for so much but it can't coats etc. Stuff comes back clean enough so long as it isn't too dirty; stains don't seem to come out from there. Johnsons in city centre is more reliable, even if dearer (often has offers too though).

Food: Arndale Market has just been refurbished and has loads of good food stalls. Veg from the stall by Man Met on Oxford Rd is good and cheap, although their fruit always seems to be past its best.

Going out: sign up for Manchester Confidential email - I've found it the best way of finding out about all the offers in various places. My friends love me for it!

I can vouch for Kath Lock recently went their (for the first time in a few years :o ) for an emergency the needles went in had an x-ray was kicked out of the room until my mouth numbed and didn't even realise anything had happened!
As far as I understand though this is only an emergency dentist?
  • If you ever go for a meal on the curry mile in Rusholme, don't walk straight into a restaurant. Wait outside and pretend to read the menu for a couple of minutes. Chances are, a waiter will appear and offer free coffee and poppadoms!

Chinatown in the city centre does very good value meals during lunchtime. 3 courses for about £4.50. All the restaurants do this.
