Annoyed over a colleague's behaviour

My team operates from 7:45am-5:45pm. Though, we work different shifts during these times. For example, I work 9:15am-5:45pm.

We have a manager, who like most managers at most employers, always at meetings, at different sites etc. We have 2 coaches - though one is on maternity leave til May(no maternity cover). The coaches tend to work from 7:45am-4:15pm, as the vast majority of us are in those times. It is impossible for some of my colleagues to start at 7:45am due to public transport.

Our main concern is a female colleague of ours (41 years old). Some days, we don't have a manager or coach. She hardly does any work when we are managerless/coachless all day and after 4:15pm. She wonders off around the large workplace and sits in breakout areas of other depts texting, phoning people or asleep under the stairs. What work she does is normally rubbish as one of the team has to correct her or have to refund money to customers' accounts due to errors. We work in a back office to a call centre - so don't receive calls from customers, only a handful from front line advisors regarding the account they are dealing at the time.

The others, including me that still working from 4:15pm still work. The work is delivered by an internal communication channel (similar to e-mail), so hardly run out of work.

We are very annoyed with this woman, first, this sort of behaviour isn't acceptable and is old enough to know better. We have a 19 year old, who behaves a lot better than her who is more than double her age. Second, she (we to believe) hasn't had a telling off, investigation etc and Thirdly, if we do get a fire alarm whilst on her wonderings off, she may not respond to this as she has slept through the night at work!

We do the work, she doesn't. I would love to hear your reactions etc.

These people are great. Keep records of what she does. Get on with your job. Don't look like a trouble maker raising it. Don't resent it just do your job as well as you can and mention all your great work with a X wasn't feeling up to dealing with Y so I did it for her just letting you know so continuity there in case she feels able to pick it up so clear communication.... Rubbish employees make good ones look great and if there are ever redundancies they have to justify them and staff have to be treated equally so any questions about the quality of your work has a reference. Be careful what you wish for if they get shot of a lazy incompetant you may get the hard working single guy with no family life who works all the hours god sends and is superman *shudder* (they are really dangerous)

It's a difficult one. It is up to her manager/coach to notice that she isn't pulling her weight. Sleeping on the job is not on though. Someone at my place of work was dismissed for that. Most places class that as gross misconduct. How you can prove this when she obviously does it when senior staff are not around is hard though.

As was advised above, the way to go is to carry on working diligently. One day she may trip herself up but until that time there isn't much you can do that is provable to the bosses.
  • Do you have a "whistle-blowing" service at work where you can anonymously report her to?

Sadly you will always get someone like this, but at some point down the line, they will get caught.

You need to raise it with YOUR line manager and let him handle it, thats his/her role. You need to carry on doing your job.
