Retraining advice

Hi

Briefly, I'm looking for a new career. To cut a long story short I'm in the very common boat of not knowing what I want to do. I'm 29 and have been talking about looking for a "proper" job for ages but often not dome anything due to uncertainty over wanting to do it and the length of time retraining might take. I've now got to the stage where I thin k I should just go for it. The question is - what? Being fairly uncertain I'm prepared to consider anything so really am looking for suggestions as to what areas are likely to offer good prospects. I know this is incredibly vague but if anyone has any ideas or thoughts at all they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

That's an area that would deffo be of interest. Paywise I couldn't really afford to be on less than about 16k, certainly not for more than a year or so - is this realistic?

if you got a job with sleep ins-thats where as part of the job there is a requiremnt to sleep at the workplace, usually a couple of times a week, they pay c £28 a night-maybe more, been a while since i was operational- i train now-£16 k might just be achievable-check the various employers websites, in leeds thats the city council, st annes, HFT, CIC, mencap for a start

Oh, I should also add that seeing as there is nothing I feel strongly about doing and given that I'm resigned very much to work being a means to an end, I was hoping to go into something well paid, on the basis that if I'm gonna dislike it there may as well be a reward!

In the hope of a better response I'll give some more information.

I'm 29, currently earning about £18k in travel doing a job that is fundamentally a call centre job. I have good A-levels and a degree, 2:2 from The University of Liverpool in Philosophy and Politics. I'm fairly open to doing anything at all and am happy to undertake extensive retraining, provided I could pay the bills whilst doing so - so part-time or on the job. Areas I have considered are nutrition (although I have no science background at all), some form of counselling or something environmental.

Any thoughts or suggestions highly welcome.

Re-training is also something I have considered, I'm college educated with GNVQ advanced business & finance. An area where I have given some thoughts to are working in an Alternative Energy field. I think this is the future for energy use and will be in demand as far as work are concern. This is something you could consider.

I'm currently preparing to apply for a position as a Warm Front Assessor starting on £17.6k + OTE. Not much but if I get into the company then perhaps other opportunity may open up for me.

If you have more experience in the travel industry than just the one job, you could look at teaching Travel and Tourism at FE level. In fact, with your background there are probably quite a few bits and pieces you could teach, which is quite common in this sector. If it appeals you could research it and send your CV to local colleges. Many people start by working part time and are trained whilst working.

On the other hand, if social care interests you there's training as a Social Worker. As you already have a first degree you'd be looking at doing a 2 year Masters degree in Social Work which is funded with a bursary. You'd need relevant experience for this, so doing some social care work for a while would not only allow you to try this field but would also give you the experience which would get you accepted for Social Work.

Cheers. I think I'd seen something along these lines advertised and it looked interesting but I was worried that the companies seemed to be offering expensive training with nothing at the end of it. Are you applying directly to them? Also, when you say "working in an Alternative Energy field, what did you have in mind?

    Cheers again
